Global Youth Services Month - April 2010

ExCEL After School Programs received a grant from Youth Service America and State Farm Insurance to serve as a Lead Agency for Global Youth Service Day 2010.  As such, we have a number of service-learning activities going on throughout the month of April.

• Day of Service
  On April 10, students in middle and high school ExCEL After School Programs will be participating in a “day of service”.  Activities include: 

1. Students becoming trainers on disaster preparedness in partnership with the American Red Cross
2. Students creating a mural in partnership with Precita Eyes
3. Park clean up and soccer game at Crocker Amazon Park in partnership with America SCORES
4. Habitat restoration at Baker Beach in partnership with Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy

• Film Festival
  On April 13, students in elementary and middle school ExCEL After School Programs will be showing their short movies and animations at the Bridge Theater as part of the ExCEL Global Youth Service Day Film Festival. 

• Olympiads
  Throughout the month of April, elementary level ExCEL After School Program sites will be holding environmental science service-learning “Olympiads” in their after school programs.  Activities include:

1. Learning how to keep the bay and ocean clean
2. Learning how to reduce landfill waste
3. Testing air quality
4. Learning about UV rays
5. Learning how to “clean up with dirt”
