Healthy Behaviors Initiative
The ExCEL Afterschool Programs boasts two Healthy Behaviors Learning Centers: ER Taylor Elementary School and Sunset Elementary School. As part of the Healthy Behaviors Initiative, both sites have implemented the Exemplary Practices in Healthy Eating, Physical Activity and Food Security and are available to help other programs do the same thing. ExCEL After School Programs Update on Grant Application
The San Francisco Unified School District's ExCEL After School Programs Office will be applying for the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant for elementary and middle schools, and the 21st Century ASSETS grant for high school students. The application deadline is December 9, 2011. A series of information sessions discussing the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant for CBOs and private schools were held to highlight elements of the Request for Application. Community Partners - Expand your summer programs!
In order to provide a range of high quality summer activities, ExCEL After School Programs is seeking proposals from Community Partners with existing afterschool or summer programs to build on their current capacity. Summer Program Providers: SF Family Summer Resource Fair is March 6
Please REGISTER NOW to Exhibit at this 5th Annual free showcase of summer activities for children, youth, and families. Both non-profit and for-profit camps, classes, arts, sports, and family services—in San Francisco and beyond—are all welcome! The event is Saturday, March 6, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Concourse Exhibition Center, Eighth and Brannan. There is no charge for Exhibitors and no charge for people to attend this event. This is an informational fair— NO SALES AT THE EVENT. Presented by the SFUSD Student Support Services Department with support from SF Department of Children, Youth & Their Families. Space is limited. It is time to register for ExCEL’s September Professional Development Series! The topic for September is Safety and addresses Section 5 of the Quality Self Assessment Tool.
Please note that Site Coordinators are required to attend at least ONE of the events each month.
Please choose one of the options below by clicking on the link and filling out the registration form. You may register for more than one event if you choose, and may also invite additional staff from your sites to register, space provided.

Please join us for the September Speaker’s Forum. We are excited to welcome our guest, Lucas Eckroad, from the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management. He will be speaking on both personal emergency/disaster preparedness as well as give an update on what the school district has been working on and how after school can be involved.
- Thursday, September 17, 9am-1pm, 20 Cook Street
ExCEL’s Workshop for September will be on Preventative Health and Crisis Management, and will be presented by Diane Goldman and Kevin Gogin. You will learn important information on SFUSD policies and procedures surrounding student health and emergencies. This workshop is required for all Site Coordinators who have been working with ExCEL for less than one year.

RAD 09 VIDEO!
Just posted: student created video from RAD '09. Watch student dancers in action! The 3rd Annual Revolution in Art and Dance (RAD) took place on February 5, 2009 at Everett Middle School. The auditorium was packed as close to 150 students danced in routines ranging from Hip-hop to Latin dance, from Samoan dance, to Chinese Dragon and Lion dances, from Bollywood to Breakdancing. It was a true trip around the world! Also: check out the photos to see highlights.

Global Youth Service Day: April 24-26
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is an exciting event where millions of youth in over 100 countries organize community service projects to address needs of their local communities through service, to be recognized for their contributions, and to be a part of a global youth service movement. This year Global Youth Service Day will be April 24-26. We encourage all ExCEL After School Programs to join the movement and participate in service projects during this week in April.
If you need assistance in planning for GYSD, ExCEL After School Programs is offering three service learning project kits: a community cleanup project kit, a community mural project kit, and a penny fundraiser project to buy malaria bednets. If you are interested in receiving materials for one of these kits, please complete the GYSD registration form and return it to Kamil Faridi by Friday April 3.

Winter Workshops
Due to your requests, we are planning a day of Winter Workshops on January 20th at the Golden Gate Club. These workshops will focus on building skills of Program Leaders and will be geared towards creating make and take activities, developing lesson plans and building after school worker professionalism. Site Coordinators are encouraged to participate in the Balanced Scorecard Professional Development and planning at their school site, but are welcome to participate in the Winter Workshops if this is not possible. Please register by January 16 by mailing in a completed registration form (pdf).
