Cesar Chavez Club Cohort

Afterschool Science+ Cohort

The Afterschool Science+ Cohort will include core activities that focus on inquiry-based science and literacy-through-science. It uses simple materials that are low-cost or free, readily available, and culturally relevant, e.g. recyclables, cooking oil, corn starch, beans, etc. Afterschool Science+ has a strong equity focus:

  • Provides positive role models of female and male scientists from diverse racial/ethnic groups;
  • Presents ideas about careers in science, math, and technology;
  • Dispels stereotypes about who can do science; and creates opportunities for students to see science as part of their everyday experiences.

Family Literacy Cohort

The Family Literacy Cohort will work with participants to provide literacy/language development techniques to families. Participants will also develop skills to do outreach in their communities with CBOs and Family Resource Centers. The goal is to develop leadership within the ExCEL ASP, leadership within the community and strengthen support for our families.

Nutrition and Recreation Cohort

The purpose of the Nutrition and Recreation Cohort is to increase quality nutrition and recreation opportunities offered to students in the after school program and share available resources related to nutrition and recreation. Participants will learn about various nutrition curricula, tips for offering more engaging recreation activities, food security for after school children and families, school gardens, and best practices in these areas.
