Pink Hair for Health

Why would Tom Nishimura, fourth grade teacher at Ulloa Elementary School, dye his hair fuchsia pink for the day?

Because Ulloa teachers told their students that if they raised over $7,000 in the school fundraiser, teachers would either cut off all their hair, dye their hair a funky color, or wear a funny outfit for a day. In fact, Ulloa raised $10,000 at their annual school Walk-A-Thon!

Instead of having the usual fundraiser of high fat chocolates, sugary candies, and fried nacho chips with cheese, students and faculty came up with a new approach to raise money doing something healthy for their bodies.

The fun hair challenge got the students excited about walking and raising money. Ulloa also gave prizes of t-shirts and movie tickets to the students and classes who walked the most or raised the most money. The grand prize was a pair of gold painted sneakers. School spirit was high and each student was committed to doing his or her very best.

The whole school community was involved... parents helped out by marking the students’ lap passports, handing out water, and cheering everyone along.  here was great music playing as the students walked around the playground and this kept everyone energized and moving. Here are some helpful tips if you would like to try this successful, healthy and fun fundraiser:

  1. Form a committee of parents and teachers to plan and run the event
  2. Have each student commit to bring in at least five dollars
  3. Collect pledges of any amount from friends and family

Ulloa Elementary School feels it is important for parents to model healthier eating and promote physical activity. Teachers and parents know the link between healthier, active students and high academic achievement. Follow their example as you plan fundraisers for your school site.
