What are some of the ways you try to eat healthy?
I eat fresh fruits and vegetables, uncooked. I eat food I have prepared myself, rather than at restaurants. I try to eat less meat.
How do you engage in physical activity (personal/classroom)?
I ride my bike to work every day. I do yoga every other day. I take evening walks.
What are some stress reduction techniques you’d like to share that you use?
I practice art which is very therapeutic.
How do you see yourself as a role model for colleagues and students?
For my colleagues, I provide resources at staff meetings. For my students I tie in nutrition and physical fitness, I’ll say: “this is what you eat to grow strong and tall.” They are very responsive to that. I cook for my students and they love it. They help prepare squash soup. I ask them to pay attention to their behavior if they have an unhealthy breakfast.
How have your personal health habits changed since becoming a NEPTL?
I’ve always been health conscious; I question things that I assumed were healthy in the past.

What are some of the ways you try to eat healthy?
I include a lot of fresh vegetables and avoid processed foods. I cook things from scratch. I try to eat small meals, so I prepare four to five snacks a day.
How do you engage in physical activity (personal/classroom)?
I like to run and go to the gym two to three times a week. I try to ride a bike to school at least once a week. I walk daily.
What are some stress reduction techniques you’d like to share that you use?
I like to drum on my own and then with others at least once a week.
How do you see yourself as a role model for colleagues and students?
I model a positive outlook—I like to laugh. Everything doesn’t have to be serious, we can have fun too. I laugh a lot with colleagues. I model healthy eating. When we have classroom celebrations, I always include healthy foods.
How have your personal health habits changed since becoming a NEPTL?
Learning about Harvest of the Month has taught me new ways to eat fruits and vegetables.

What are some of the ways you try to eat healthy?
I eat fruits, vegetables and avoid too much meat. I try to cook with not too much oil.
How do you engage in physical activity (personal/classroom)?
I stretch in the morning and then use the treadmill at home. I practice Kung Fu with my daughter.
What are some stress reduction techniques you’d like to share that you use?
I practice a stretch that I learned in China.
How do you see yourself as a role model for colleagues and students?
By eating healthy, and avoiding soda and candy. I also provide positive rewards with non-food items.

I am more aware of healthy ways to cook and include fruits and vegetables.

What are some of the ways you try to eat healthy?
My diet is mostly fruit, vegetables and grains like brown rice. I drink water all day. I don’t eat junk food.
How do you engage in physical activity (personal/classroom)?
I try to walk 30 minutes a day during the week and then walk 10 miles a day on the weekend. I play with the Hula hoop and do free weights while watching the news.
What are some stress reduction techniques you’d like to share that you use?
I like to walk and be outdoors. My favorite places are Muir Woods, Mt. Tam, and the Tennessee Valley. I also like to garden in a quiet place.
How do you see yourself as a role model for colleagues and students?
For colleagues, I share tips at staff meetings about the benefits of nutritious eating and drinking water. For students, I like them to see me eating healthy small portions and drinking water. I do 20 minutes a day of P.E., yoga and stretching. I also have a Hula hoop available as a reward for students who complete their work.
How have your personal health habits changed since becoming a NEPTL?
They haven’t really changed except that now in the classroom I teach more nutrition lessons with my students.

I’m trying to eat vegan including more fruits, vegetables and nuts.
How do you engage in physical activity (personal/classroom)?
I run with kids on the school yard. I walk a half-mile per day. When I’m sitting at home, I use hand weights.
What are some stress reduction techniques you’d like to share that you use?
I stretch and breathe deeply every morning and before I go to bed.
How do you see yourself as a role model for colleagues and students?
I don’t eat candy or drink soda. I also don’t give candy as a reward—I offer fruit instead.
How have your personal health habits changed since becoming a NEPTL?
I am more conscious of labels. I encourage other teachers to try a vegan diet and eat at vegan restaurants.

I try to eat vegetables, roasted beets, jicama, cucumber and tomatoes. My in-laws have a garden and they plant lots of vegetables.
How do you engage in physical activity (personal/classroom)?
I like to Hula dance twice a week.
What are some stress reduction techniques you’d like to share that you use?
I relax my mind, focus on myself and then dance hula.
How do you see yourself as a role model for colleagues and students?
I eat healthy, give healthy snacks to students, and provide breakfast for students who might have missed a meal.
How have your personal health habits changed since becoming a NEPTL?
I used to eat a lot of junk food, but now I eat more fruit and think twice before I grab junk food. I try to choose a healthier alternative.

I eat a mostly vegetarian diet with fish on occasion. I avoid processed foods and eat meals with grains and vegetables.

I practice yoga and go to the gym on occasion.

I take a yoga class, practice deep breathing, spend time in nature and visit with my friends and family.
How do you see yourself as a role model for colleagues and students?
I model healthy eating habits for my students. I try to set an example to educate students about unhealthy food habits.
How have your personal health habits changed since becoming a NEPTL?
I am more aware of how many fruits and vegetables I eat on a daily basis. Because students see me as a role model I try harder to demonstrate healthy eating.

I shop at the Farmers Market and then cook a lot. I try to think about ways to add fruits and vegetables to meals.
How do you engage in physical activity (personal/classroom)?
I take a Zumba class on Saturday morning. I go with a friend who has set a goal of running a half-marathon. Sharing activities with other people helps motivate me.
What are some stress reduction techniques you’d like to share that you use?
I like being in nature, going into a garden, talking with friends, deep breathing, quiet time and a sense of humor.
How do you see yourself as a role model for colleagues and students?
As a NPTL, I am working hard to get a wellness policy started.
How have your personal health habits changed since becoming a NEPTL?
Being a NPLT reinforces that nutrition is important and that I have to make time for it. I now consider snacks as mini meals.

I eat a vegan diet: whole grains, no gluten and not much dairy or meat.
How do you engage in physical activity (personal/classroom)?
I surf and run on the beach about 12 – 24 miles per week. I ride my bike, hike and then do 20 minutes of yoga in the morning.
What are some stress reduction techniques you’d like to share that you use?
I do 10 minutes of meditation after 20 minutes of yoga daily. I check in with my body if I’m getting stressed out. I like to do fun activities like surfing, biking, hiking and being outside. I like to have quiet time to read and reflect daily.
How do you see yourself as a role model for colleagues and students?
My students see me eating a healthy lunch or snack with lots of fruits and vegetables. I follow the healthy snack policy for our classroom, so students don’t bring in junk food.
How have your personal health habits changed since becoming a NEPTL?
I continue advancing my knowledge of how food affects your body and mind.

I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables which helps to cut down on fats.
How do you engage in physical activity (personal/classroom)?
I try to participate with the students in P.E. class for 35 minutes, three times a week. I like to walk, so I park far away from where I’m going so I can get exercise.
What are some stress reduction techniques you’d like to share that you use?
I like to take it one day at a time. I understand I may not be able to solve every problem right away. I spend time with my nephews.
How do you see yourself as a role model for colleagues and students?
I am more conscious of what I am eating now. On most Fridays, we all bring snacks and mine are always fruits and vegetables.
How have your personal health habits changed since becoming a NEPTL?
I use less salt in my diet now, and share the message with my students. I practice what I preach for both the teachers and students.

I try to meditate before my own children wake up. I walk with friends.

I give updates at staff meetings relating to professional development. I discuss the healthy snack policy with colleagues. In class, I created a new healthy eating idea: ask one student per month to bring in a fruit for the whole class. We use the food bank plan to ask for fruits and vegetables only.
How have your personal health habits changed since becoming a NEPTL?
I’m more aware about being a role model for my students. I encourage healthier alternatives and share the healthier snack policy.

I no longer give out candy, or promote nacho sales, instead I support a healthy snack sale.
