Welcome to the Translation and Interpretation Unit

The Translation and Interpretation Unit (TIU) was established in the fall of 2001 to open up an additional channel for meaningful parent and community involvement in the education of San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) students. Through translation and interpretation services, parents and community members receive most of the SFUSD written information in their own language, allowing them to fully participate in public meetings and conferences convened by the SFUSD departments and school sites.

Parental involvement is a key factor in the success of a student’s education. In our District, more than fifty percent of students come from homes where English is not their primary spoken language. The efforts of Limited English Proficiency (LEP) parents to take part in their children’s educational lives are often blocked by language and culture barriers at all levels of the school system. Translation and interpretation services are the key to LEP parent involvement, ultimately benefiting the school system as a whole and these parents’ children in particular.
