SFUSD School Health Programs Department

The School Health Programs Department supports a series of programs and services that help each SFUSD school create a healthy learning environment for youth.  These include:

Alcohol Abuse Reduction Program
Providing resources to develop and implement innovative and effective alcohol abuse prevention programs for high school students

Asthma and Indoor Air Quality Program
Serving children with moderate to severe asthma in 30 – 40 elementary schools

California Healthy Kids Survey/Youth Risk Behavior Survey
Conducting local health surveys to inform program planning

Centers for Disease Control/Local HIV Prevention
Educating students, staff and parents about sex and STI prevention, including HIV infection

Community-Based Organization Program
Providing orientations for community-based organizations working on-site in the schools

Comprehensive Health Education Program
Providing classroom instruction to help students move toward health literacy

Comprehensive Safety Plan for Every School
Developing plans to protect kids from physical and emotional harm

Computer Based Health Strategies
Increasing the awareness of health issues using computer tools and strategies

Condom Availability Program
Making sexuality education, abstinence education and condoms available at high schools

Crisis Response
Helping students and staff cope with painful emotions from a community or school crisis

Elementary School Counseling Grant (ESCG)
Enhancing and integrating mental health learning support/counseling services for optimal learning environments at our 19 STAR schools 

Elementary School Health Advocates
Serving as liaison between SHPD and elementary schools to communicate health information

Elementary School Truancy Program
Improving school attendance by connecting families with supportive services

Expanded Collaboratives for Excellence in Learning
(ExCEL After School Programs)

Providing health assessments and services to students with unmet health needs

Support Services for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Youth
Providing support and resources to create safer learning environments for all students including gay, lesbian, transgender students, teachers and families

Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE)
