Physical Education Program (PEP)

Historical Background: The Physical Education Program (PEP), Studnets Healthy and Physical Everyday (SHAPE) is a U.S. Department of Education, Carole M. White grant awarded to SFUSD.

What is the PEP SHAPE Program?
PEP SHAPE Program has the following objectives

  • Increase amounts of regular physical activity for students during after-school program.
  • Improve physical fitness, motor skills, social skills, and cognitive skills of ASLC students; develop new interests and skills in lifelong physical activities; promote better knowledge of healthy eating and nutrition.
  • Increase family awareness and participation related to physical activity and nutrition.
  • Empower SFUSD after-school staff to implement a high-quality physical education/activity program at their program site.
  • Provide professional development for ASLC staff

Physical Education and Nutrition Education Promotion in the classroom:

  • Satisfy the required 40 minutes of physical activity component in the After-school program every week.
  • Implement the research validated physical education program SPARK curriculum and Nutrition program 5 A Day Power Play into the ASLC program and become familiar with the California Physical Education Content Standards.
  • Offer choices of physical activities that accommodate individual interests and developmental levels.
  • Receive physical activity equipment to support physical, motor and social development.
  • Conduct a Family Physical Activity Night one per semester and participate in two school-wide health promotion events.
  • Implement 5 A Day Power Play in the ASLC program providing student and parents with curriculum that supports healthy eating habits and nutrition.

Teacher Support:

  • Physical Education Nutrition Leader (PENL)at each site
  • Participate in professional development on physical education and nutrition education promotion
  • Provide appropriate equipment and monitor usage
