Historical Background: The San Francisco Unified School District
and many service providers havea long history of working together
for the benefit of students and families.
School Health Programs Department
(SHPD) collaborates with community based organizations,agencies,
private and public institutions, as well as local city departments
to “...assist school sites inbuilding their capacity to develop,
implement and coordinate programs and services to meet theneeds of
the whole child,” (SHPD, Vision/Mission Statement.) Inspired
by SHPD’s mission, the CBOProgram is committed to assisting
sites in developing and maintaining vital connections tocommunity
resources.
What is the CBO Program?
The CBO Program seeks to create
a district wide process and procedures to ensure the optimalworking
relationship between school sites and community based organizations,
striving to have anequal distribution of service provider resources
throughout SFUSD.
Current Status:
- CBO Service Provider and Classroom
Speaker Orientation: The CBO Orientation/workshopis conducted twice
a year and covers relevant SFUSD information, including policies & guidelines;
service provider responsibilities; an overview of “school
culture” and
strategies forsuccessfully interfacing with school sites. Additional
workshop components include: proceduresfor successful presentations;
helpful tips on how to support students and teachers in theclassroom
presentation setting; strategies for overcoming barriers and stumbling
blocks; and areview process related to materials/presenters dealing
with sexuality. A list of CBO’s who haveparticipated in the
orientation is updated and distributed annually to inform school
sites ofCBO’s with whom they may want to collaborate.
- Curriculum
and Materials Review Task Force (CMRTF): The CMRTF, composed of teachers,parents,
administrators and community members, meets a minimum of twice yearly.
Materialsare submitted for review by district staff, community based
organizations and agencies wishingto make classroom presentations.
The Task Force reviews materials for age and developmentalappropriateness,
cultural inclusion, relevance to curriculum and consistency with
communitynorms. Following these meetings, the Health Education Human
Sexuality Related ApprovedSpeakers list is updated and disseminated
to all school sites.

How to Become a CBO Partner
Are you interested in working or partnering with SHPD?
Here’s what to do:
- Submit a Letter of Intent to the district on your agency’s
letterhead.
Instructions and a template for the letter of intent can be found
at www.dcyf.org.
- Attend a district orientation. The next orientation dates
are September 26, 2006 and November 7, 2006. To RSVP for
an orientation, send an e-mail with your contact information to kchoy@muse.sfusd.edu.
- Submit a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or
Contract

situation.)
- Complete a Site Agreement with
each site you will be serving and submit to your district contact

- Submit curricular and/or program materials for review
