Computer Based Health Strategies

...Twenty-First Century tools for 21st Century teaching and Learning

SFUSD/IBM – Working together to Support Teachers and CDE Innovative Tobacco Funding:
Through a $2 million grant from IBM, SFUSD and Every Child Can Learn Foundation (the District’s non-profit support organization), we have developed various technologies addressing two goals:

  1. to support teachers and families during the Student Success Team (SST) process and
  2. to help Middle and High School students develop better “life skills.” In addition, grant funds were secured through the State Department of Education to create Innovative Tobacco Prevention Programs.

What is the goal of the Computer Based Health Strategies?
The goal is to increase communication among teachers, students, parents and the community to promote a collaborative environment supporting student achievement and to increase awareness of health issues facilitating the development of “Life Skills” middle and high school students.

Student Case Management System:
A tool and system designed to improve communications among teachers, students, parent and the community to promote a collaborative environment supporting student achievement.  It provides:

Strategies Database – Provide best instructional practices and support services available.  The database includes details on appropriate usage of strategies, methods to gauge progress and suggestion for parental involvement.

CBO Resource Database – The database contains community resources arranged by SF neighborhoods with details of services, hours of operations, cost, and language capacity.  The database facilitates identification and access of resources to meet student and family needs.

Life-Skills CD-ROMs for Middle and High School Students:
CD-ROM software has been developed by SFUSD teachers and School Health Programs to increase awareness of health issues and to help develop “Life Skills” of middle and high school students.   Four skills are targeted: making informed decisions, communicating effectively, managing stress, and setting personal goals.  These interactive, animated CD-ROMs are used by health education classes and counselors as tools for students to use individually, during Advisory periods and at Beacon Centers.   The “Basement Bums” (middle school) and “Bay Net 4” (high school) are sets of CD-ROMs with teacher kits including extensive activities.

Activities within SFUSD and School Health Programs Department that support computer based health strategies are:

  • Student Success Team (SST)
  • Student Assistance Program (SAP)
  • Health Promotion Committee (HPC)
  • Healthy School Teams (HST)
  • Health Advocates (HA)
  • Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE)
