Diseases (STDs) occur each year among 10-24 year olds.
Historical Background
For the past fifteen years, the Center
for Disease Control (CDC) has
provided funding for STD and HIV education at school sites as part
of a comprehensive school health program. CDC funded professional
development and the development of curriculum
materials. Curriculum materials on HIV have been created and adopted
by the Board of Education for students K‑12 and professional
development has been provided to teachers as part of the
comprehensive health education program.
What are the goals of the program?
- To provide professional development to District wide
Health Advocates at elementary schools, Healthy School Teams at
middle schools and Health Promotion Committees at the high schools
to teach and promote health education.
- To provide professional development in the area of sexuality
and STD prevention, including HIV infection ,within the comprehensive
school health programs to District Health Educators.
- To implement a Health Education Teacher Leader program
to assist in presenting professional development to health educators.
- To establish Districtwide events to be implemented in
all schools, namely: World AIDS Day Commemoration and Gay Pride
Month.
- To link with Community Based Organizations who do classroom
presentations regarding
sexuality including STD and HIV prevention.
- To provide health information to parents through the
PTA “Cablegram”, newsletter
Current Status
HIV Prevention is taking place in all schools
at all grade levels.
