Historical Background: The School Health Center
was started in January 1992 by San Francisco Unified School District’s
Schools Health Programs Department to provide health assessment and
services to children with unmet health needs.
What is the goal of the School Health Center?
The goal is to provide health assessments and services to uninsured
children with unmet health needs.
What is the School Health Center? The
purpose of the Center is to assess preschool, elementary and middle
school children for health problems that may interfere with their
learning. As part of the school district, the Health Center personnel
can work closely with the children, parents/ guardians, classroom
teachers, resource specialists, and school administrators to identify
and manage problems that impair school attendance and achievement.
Children in need of further services are referred to community agencies
for ongoing programs/services.
Children enrolled in San Francisco Unified School District’s
preschools, elementary and middle schools will be seen at the Center
if they do not have a regular medical provider or are unable to obtain
these services from the provider. Children must have a family income
in the low to moderate range and no private health insurance. Medi‑Cal
is accepted. Parents/ guardians or school personnel can refer children
to the School Health Center.
The following services are provided at the School Health Center.
- physical examination
- neurological examination
- hearing and vision testing
- blood test for iron deficiency
- urinalysis
- case management, developmental
and language screening interview of parent/guardian to obtain complete
health history immunizations and TB skin tests referral to primary
care providers and community agencies interpretation of medical
information to school personnel
