Best Practices

Global Youth Service Day 2008

Prepare Students With Healthy Ideas for Summer

Some tips and tricks to consider:

  • Go Forth and Explore!
Choose a neighborhood and do a walking tour with students. Talk about the history, culture, and community. For instance, explore Chinatown and talk about how this enclave came to be, sample the food, and create a scavenger hunt!
  • Get Culture!
Check out local museums and find out when their free days are happening.
  • Try a new Activity!
Did you know the San Francisco Expanded Learning Collaborative has a lot of free resources and curriculum? Check out www.sfelc.org for some great ideas!
  • BE Inventive!
Tap into your Program Leaders' hidden talents and create an Enrichment Club out of it. You would be surprised how many students would love to join the Making Things Out of Duct Tape Club.
  • Safety First!
Remember to report injuries and incidents to ExCEL using our forms found on our HUB resources page just like the regular school year.
  • Be Happenin'
Find cool events to take your students to on www.sfkids.org
  • Think Ahead
Going on an Educational Excursion? Don't forget to fill out an Educational Excursion Approval form at least 2 weeks before the activity is supposed to happen.
  • Love Your Neighbor
Keep practicing Restorative Practices throughout the summer!
  • Sing your Heart Out!
Promote literacy by incorporating a Karaoke Club. Who doesn’t like to sing?
