Farm Day at SFUSD
More than 11,000 San Francisco Bay Area students had the opportunity of a lifetime when California agriculture was showcased on 24 school campuses and at the Cow Palace as part of Farm Day on October 20, 2011.
Students experienced first-hand farm and ranch activities including how to milk a cow, hull rice and candle chicken eggs, among many other educational activities such as gardening, healthy eating and sustainability.
The event was a joint effort between California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom (CFAITC), San Francisco Unified School District and the Grand National Horse and Livestock Show (Cow Palace) with the goal for students to obtain a basic understanding about where their food and fiber come from. Farm day was brought to San Francisco Unified School District 25 years ago and the activities symbolically recreated that occasion to help celebrate CFAITC’s Silver Anniversary of bringing agriculture education resources to schools throughout California.
More than 250 volunteers, including farmers and ranchers from across the state, made the educational experience memorable by literally bringing their farms to San Francisco. The activities included farm animal visits, school garden demonstrations and classroom presentations. For example, at Gordon J. Lau Elementary School more than 650 students interacted with cows, sheep, and chickens while hearing presentations from cattle women, produce specialists, plant advisors, youth 4-H speakers, and other farmers and ranchers.
