The day of the trip, students were sent on a scavenger hunt looking for edible plant parts. The students identified roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds.
In addition to seeing the different plant parts being sold at the farmer’s market, the students had a chance to interact with the farmers. Asking questions such as:
- “Where is your farm located?”
- “How do you know when to pick this vegetable?”
- “How did you learn to grow this food?”
By interviewing farmers, students learned about different professions and had an opportunity to practice their communication skills.
Students can:
- Create a bulletin board of fruits and vegetables.
- Display art projects such as watercolors, collages or picture books.
- Set up fruit and vegetable tasting booths.
Students can:
- Encourage families to shop at local farmer’s markets.
- Make a meal with food purchased from the farmer’s market.
