Harvey Milk Junior Leaders Gain Work Experience

by Orly Ramirez, Assistant Site Coordinator

About the Program ...

At Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy Elementary School we are proud to have the Junior Leaders Program. The Junior Leaders program is a great opportunity for the older participants, who are in 3rd-5th grade, to experience the steps to apply for a job and the responsibilities to have a job.  Junior Leaders learn responsibility and the skills to supervise and work with the younger grade K-2nd.

In order to be a Junior Leader, students had to apply for the position. Once they were hired, we had a meeting with all the Junior Leaders and went over expectations and job description; students who were still interested then signed a contract agreement.

ymcaJunior Leaders are scheduled to work once a week. They work a shift for one hour and a half and at the end of their shift they get paid with our famous Y Bucks! They can use their Y bucks to buy fun prizes and school supplies at the Y Store!

The Junior Leaders have been great role models and helpers for all our K-2 participants. The Junior Leaders are task with multiple responsibilities such as: Setting a leading example during recreation time, supporting during academic time, and help support the Program Leaders. Junior Leaders have been great on leading group games, sports, and stretches with the younger participants during recreation time. Thanks to the Junior Leaders hard work and support, K-2 recreation time always looks great! They are always willing to help the younger participants during any conflict, homework time, and offer positive advice and feedback.

We are thrilled and honored to have our older kids to take the role of leadership! We are thankful for all our Junior Leaders hard work and dedication!
