Making Middle Schools Safer and Inclusive!

The LGBTQ Middle School Initiative is a program designed to reduce bullying and improve school climate for LGBTQ students. We are excited to be entering year 2 of this 3 year pilot program.

The project brings Health Initiatives for Youth (HIFY) and Lavender Youth Recreation and Information Center (LYRIC) to SFUSD schools to provide classroom workshops and staff professional development, as well as strong support for Gay-Straight Alliances and Diversity Clubs.

This joint effort of SFUSD's Support Services for LGBTQ Youth and San Francisco's Department of Children, Youth and their Families (DCYF) is currently being piloted in selected middle schools across San Francisco.

We found tremendous success with year one programming: HIFY and LYRIC offered exciting education opportunities for students and staff, as well as LGBTQ pride celebration activities! We aim to have the similar success in year 2 with plans to having profound and long lasting positive impact on school climate, and looking to replicate similar successes across all school sites. The LGBTQ Middle School Initiative is helping us move forward with our vision of inclusive and supportive schools for all!
