About Health Promotion Committee

The HPC includes adult and student coordinators. All adult HPC Coordinator activities (described below) are based on professional development, policy, health awareness, educational programs and administrative duties.

What is the goal of the High School Health Promotion Committee?
The goal of the HPC is to increase the capacity and effectiveness of comprehensive and coordinated health programs at the high school level.

  • Health Liaison Coordinators (HLC) focus on the promotion of health awareness events and health education, coordinating activities including Substance Use Prevention, HIV/AIDS Awareness, Nutrition and Fitness Promotion, educational theatre presentations, and ropes and sailing trips. The HLC also supports the implementation of health education for the general student population
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning (LGBTQ) Support Liaisons (LSL) focus on the promotion of health awareness events and the coordination of safe school activities including Respect and Violence Prevention, Diversity Awareness, Gay/Straight Alliance, and the Diversity Club. The LSL also provides drop-in sessions for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth, and promotes District Diversity Curriculum.
  • Tobacco Youth Outreach Coordinators (TYOC) focus on the promotion of health awareness events and the coordination of activities including tobacco prevention, implementation of the Tobacco Referral Policy and Intervention Protocol, and monthly mandatory Smokeless School Days sessions. The TYOC also coordinates an eight-week voluntary Smoking Cessation Program with Breathe California and oversees peer education presentations conducted by Youth Outreach Workers. This position does not exist at Wellness Program sites where the Nurse provides these services.
  • Youth Outreach Coordinators (YOC) focus on the involvement of youth in the promotion of health awareness events and activities. YOCs also coordinate and mentor a team of six Youth Outreach Workers (YOW) who are responsible for promoting wellness services and ensuring youth a voice in health awareness activities. This position exists only at Wellness Program sites.
  • Youth Outreach Workers (YOW) focus on youth empowerment and advocacy in the planning and implementation of health-related programs. YOWs collaborate with a team of students to publicize and strengthen the quality of the health and wellness services offered, including tobacco and alcohol prevention education on campus. YOWs also conduct peer education presentations on health-related topics
