Healthy School Teams: Middle School

 

  • Health Liaison: Focuses on the promotion of health activities to the general student population and implementation of Health Ed Curriculum (e.g., district wide activities such as Red Ribbon Week, Great American Smoke Out, etc.)
  • LGBTQ Support Liaison: Focuses on creating a safe school community for all students with an emphasis on gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth; coordinates a Gay-Straight Alliance/Diversity Club and Gay Pride Celebration in April
  • Positive Alternatives/Physical Activities Coordinator (Grades 6-8 schools only): Reconnects high-risk students to school (e.g. academic, behavior, attendance and health concerns); students are referred through Student Assistance Programs (SAP) or by site staff to connect them to school by participating in a positive alternative (ropes, backpacking, sailing) and/or physical activity
  • School District Nurse (SDN*): Serves as a key health awareness resource for the HST and collaborates with on-site HST members on activities related to health education, including encouraging implementation of the research validated curriculum; also conducts groups and may mentor Youth Outreach Workers (YOWs) to deliver presentations in areas such as nutrition Not all Middle School sites have a SDN
  • Learning Support Professional (LSP): A designated team member who schedules and facilitates quarterly school site HST meetings and supports all HST members to implement health related activities and programs
  • Youth Outreach Coordinator (YOC): Focuses on the involvement of youth in the promotion of health awareness events and activities such as tobacco presentations (LSP given priority)
  • Foster Youth Services (FYS): Position is designed to provide on-site support and coordinated services to foster youth students. The FYS Liaison will work with the Foster Youth Services Program to support the goal of improving educational outcomes for students in foster care.
