Clinical Internship Program: Supporting Emerging Mental Health Professionals

The Student Intervention Team (SIT) recruits, trains and supervises a yearly cohort of approximately 50-60 graduate-level clinical interns. These emerging mental health professionals provide individual and group school-based mental health and case management services to the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). They are Master’s or post-Master’s level graduate students in social work, marriage and family therapy, and licensed professional counseling from prestigious universities nationwide. Interns have the opportunity to pursue research endeavors and can fulfill hours to earn a Pupil Personnel Service Credential. Many interns go on to utilize their training as SFUSD employees upon completion of their internship. For more information, contact SIT at (415) 242-2615 or

  • Intern with a High School Wellness Center!

The San Francisco Wellness Initiative is a partnership between San Francisco Unified School District, the Department of Children, Youth and their Families, and the Department of Public Health.  Wellness Centers provide and link students to health care and prevention/early intervention programs and services. Areas of need and focus are: mental health services, substance use prevention and treatment services, reproductive and physical health services and linkage to community based services.

Wellness Centers provide students access to health education, reproductive health, mental health, and substance use services, as well as referral to primary healthcare providers. Students can self-refer to Wellness Center Services or can be referred by school site staff or parents. Students are assessed, counseled, and referred to community service providers when appropriate.

  • Intern with an Elementary or Middle School!

School Social Workers (SSWs) are mental health professionals who work at schools throughout the District to assist school site staff in achieving academic excellence and improved attendance, by decreasing risky behaviors and creating safe and healthy school communities.

Interns work alongside SSWs to provide resources and coordinate services for identified students and families to address mental health concerns; support teachers in developing optimal learning environments for students; develop behavior management and classroom management interventions/plans; conduct educational and/or psychosocial support groups based on identified needs; and consult with school site personnel and collaboratively develop a plan to increase a positive school climate that will foster student achievement.

Interns are a vital part of the Wellness Centers and Social Work Services in SFUSD. They play a pivotal role in providing individual and group treatment for our students. The services they provide may vary with the needs of each site but always include individual work with students. For more information, contact

School-Based Mental Health Services: Supporting K-12 Students and Families
Under the direct clinical supervision of SIT staff and other licensed mental health staff in the district, interns counsel students experiencing emotional issues that impact learning. Counseling services include individual and group play and talk therapy, as well as case management, teacher consultation and family outreach. Interns serve students in general education and special education throughout the District.

Employee/Intern Consultation and Professional Development: Supporting SFUSD Staff
SIT offers clinical group supervision and case consultation along with case management assistance to all Student, Family, and Community Support Department employees and interns. SIT personnel provide weekly clinical supervision to employees seeking licensure as Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) or Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs). The Student Intervention Team is an approved Continuing Education provider and provides monthly Professional Development Workshops to Interns and Staff.

Crisis Support
The Student Intervention Team provides crisis support with the Office of School Health Programs.  The clinical staff is part of the triage team that provides crisis response and support to individual student crises that occur at the school sites.  The Student Intervention Team also leverages crisis support at school sites through the work of the interns at the sites.
