August Institiute 2013

ExCEL’s Annual August Institute

Welcome back! Summer break has come to a close and we are gearing up for the first day of school. ExCEL kicked off the 2013-14 school year with our annual August Institute. The Institute took place August 6-8 and was held at St. Mary’s Cathedral with over 200 youth workers participating each day.

Our very own Associate Superintendent, Kevin Truitt opened first day of the Institute and the rest of the day focused on ExCEL basics, compliance, and Public Profit’s rollout of the Quality Action Plan tool. Eighteen different workshops were offered over the course of the next two days by professionals from SFUSD and other non-profit youth based organizations.  Mimi Sarkisian’s “Motor! Creating a Sensory and Motor Program for Your School,” Kathleen Martinez’s “Books and Beyond! Integrating Literacy into Enrichment Activities,” and Miranda Vasquez’s “Program Basics: Safety and Relationship Building” were among some of the great workshops offered.

This year, ExCEL went green and loaded all Institute information, handouts and Power Point presentations on the ExCEL website. Kiosks were also set up around the lobby area for participants to complete building permits or request technology access. On the first day, the first 50 participants who arrived with a reusable drinking container received priority boarding for lunch.

The entire August Institute radiated a positive energy and many of the workshops had participants overflowing into the halls. Three cheers to all our participating After School Superheroes and here’s to the start of another great school year!
