The conference was opened by our keynote speaker, Terrance Li, a senior at Mission High School, who spoke about the need for students to be proactive and to rely on the support of others for a united effort.  Next, students had an opportunity to get to know each other through a series of activities lead by the Americorps VISTAs, who currently assist the Cesar Chavez After School Service Clubs with the implementation of service-learning projects.  Students then had an opportunity to participate in various workshops.  Students from Marina Middle School participated in the KaBOOM! playground build at Leonard R. Flynn elementary school by painting murals and gardening. For example, in the diversity workshop, students participated in activities geared toward building their skills in self-reflection, communication, trust, and appreciation for diversity.  In the event planning workshop, participants learned how to develop an effective action plan to mobilize the planning of an event at their site or in the community.
The after lunch wake-up activity proved to be a fun time, as students danced to the latest music.  Overall, the conference was a success, and we look forward to holding another Youth Action Conference in the spring!  We would like to thank Ruben Urbina of Everett MiddleSchool for hosting this event.
